  • Single-unit ordering — Some distributors will roll their eyes at a quantity of 3. Move on. There are plenty of suppliers who understand small business needs. I use a mix of Grainger, 1000Bulbs, and a local electrical supply house that doesn't mind small orders.

One insider tip: the first quote is rarely the final price for ongoing relationships. But you have to prove you're reliable first—pay on time, be clear about specs, don't waste their time. Then you can negotiate. Not on a first order of 3 drivers, but over time.

Step 4: Verify Compatibility Before Signing Off on Installation

I assumed "same voltage" meant identical performance across brands. Didn't verify. Turned out one brand's 24V driver had a different ripple factor that caused a faint hum in the fixtures. Had to reorder.

Here's my verification checklist before the electrician starts:

  • Driver output matches fixture input — voltage, current, polarity. Triple-check.

Step 5: Test Everything—Including the Smart Features

One thing vendors won't tell you: "standard" often includes buffer time in their production queue. A 3-day lead time might really be 1 day of work + 2 days of buffer. That's fine until you're waiting on a replacement driver and the buffer works against you. Ask for actual ship dates, not "standard turnaround."

Common Mistakes I've Made (So You Don't Have To)

Here are a few things I learned the expensive way:

  • Assuming the driver is the only problem. Sometimes the LED array itself is failing. A new driver won't fix dead LEDs. Test the fixture with a known-good driver before ordering replacements.
  • Ignoring the dimmer compatibility. Not all LED drivers work with all dimmers. Even within the Legrand lineup, some drivers are designed for trailing-edge dimmers, others for leading-edge. Mixing them up causes flicker at best, failure at worst.
