The Driver is Dead. Your Timeline Isn't.
An LED driver dying is rarely convenient. It usually happens on a Friday at 4:30 PM, or the day before a big inspection. I've handled a lot of these calls in my role coordinating lighting solutions for commercial and residential installers. The first question is always the same: "How fast can I get this fixed?"
And that's the right question. But the answer isn't simple. It depends entirely on your situation. I've seen a perfect, standard replacement work for one client, while the same part number would've cost another client their installation deadline.
So here's the thing: there's no single "best" way to replace a dead LED driver, especially for something like a Legrand Adorne under cabinet lighting system. You need to sort yourself into one of three scenarios first. Let's do that.
Scenario 1: The Emergency. You Need Light Tomorrow.
Your client's kitchen reveal is in 36 hours. The under cabinet lights are dead. You've confirmed the driver is toast. This isn't about finding the perfect part; it's about finding a working part that you can get in your hands today.
What I'd do: Forget the OEM part number for a minute. Call your local electrical wholesalers and lighting supply houses. Ask them what constant-current or constant-voltage drivers they have on the shelf that match your output voltage and wattage. Don't be precious about the brand.
In March 2024, I had a client who needed to salvage a high-end kitchen install. The spec was a specific Legrand dimmable driver. Lead time? 2 weeks. We called every supplier within a 50-mile radius. Found a generic, industry-standard driver from another manufacturer that had the same 24V, 48W output, and it was physically small enough to fit the cavity above the cabinets. We paid a $45 premium over the online price, but the alternative was a $15,000 penalty for missing the install window.
Key things to check in a pinch:
- Output type: Is it constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC)? Your under cabinet system is almost certainly 24V CV. Don't mix these up.
- Wattage: The new driver must meet or exceed the total wattage of your LED strips. A 60W driver on a 48W load? Fine. A 40W driver on a 48W load? You'll get a flickering mess and a very short lifespan.
- Dimmability: If the original was dimmable, your replacement needs to be, too. This is where many generic drivers fail. Legrand's architectural dimming is good. Not every cheap driver can handle a modern dimmer, especially an MLV or ELV type.
This isn't ideal. But it's fast. You trade a bit of brand consistency for a guaranteed win on time.
Scenario 2: The Planned Swap. A Week is Fine.
It's a Tuesday, you've got a service call for a client whose lights have been flickering for a month. The driver is clearly going. You've got a week before your next appointment. This is the one scenario where you should absolutely do a perfect, part-for-part replacement.
What I'd do: This is the time to find the exact OEM driver. If your system is a Legrand Adorne or Radiant under cabinet setup, find the exact part number. The reason is compatibility—not just electrical, but physical and mechanical. The mounting brackets, the wire leads, the connector types, the form factor to fit the channel—all of these matter when you're not under the gun.
People assume the lowest quote means the vendor is more efficient. What they don't see is which costs are being hidden or deferred. In this case, a $35 generic driver that's 2mm too thick to fit in the bracket is a $35 loss plus another hour of your labor trying to make it work.
How to find the right part:
- Look for the model number printed on the driver label. It's usually a string like
AC-XXXXX-XX. - Search for that model number from a reputable distributor. Lead times can be 3–7 days for standard shipping, which is why this only works for Scenario 2.
- Check the Legrand site specs. I've seen instances where a system shipped with a 24V driver, but the spec sheet called for a 12V driver. Trust the label over the spec sheet if they conflict.
From the outside, it looks like you just need a power supply. The reality is that an LED driver is a smart device. It manages thermal output and current regulation. A bad match can shorten the life of your high-quality LED strip by years.
Scenario 3: The Upgrade. Opportunity in Disguise.
You're renovating a space and the old driver finally kicked the bucket. Don't just replace it. Re-evaluate the whole system. This is your chance to solve a problem you've been living with.
What I'd do: This is the moment to consider a smart driver. If you've been toying with Matter or Zigbee, or you want to tie your under cabinet lights into a larger lighting control system, now's the time. A standard dumb driver has just failed. A smart driver from something like a Danfoss Zigbee module (or a compatible Zigbee 3.0 driver) can give you app control and automation.
Honestly, I'm not sure why more people don't use this as a trigger point. My best guess is they're focused on the cost of the part, not the value of the feature. I've never fully understood the hesitation—adding a $70 smart driver during a planned upgrade is a no-brainer compared to paying a $150 service call later just to add a switch.
What to look for in an upgrade path:
- Zigbee/Matter compatibility: If you have a smart home hub, a Zigbee driver integrates seamlessly. Legrand has products in this space, but don't rule out a standalone Zigbee driver if you need fast availability.
- Wireless dimming: If you're tired of a physical dimmer switch, a wired-in controller that works with your phone is a massive quality-of-life improvement.
- Power monitoring (optional): Some advanced drivers (like those from EcoDim Zigbee systems) can track energy usage. Not essential, but a nice-to-have for energy-conscious clients.
Scenario 3 is the only one where the answer is "do something different." It's counter-intuitive because you are replacing a failed part with something more expensive. But the long-term savings in control and convenience often outweigh the upfront cost.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Here's how I decide. It's not based on the part or the brand. It's based on one variable: deadline pressure.
- Deadline pressure is critical (event, inspection, client stay): You're in Scenario 1. Stop reading forums, pick up the phone, and find the fastest available alternative. Don't worry about the brand. It's a tool.
- Deadline pressure is moderate (routine service, planned maintenance): You're in Scenario 2. Take your time, order the exact part, and do a clean, proper install. This is the low-risk, high-quality path.
- Deadline pressure is low (renovation, opportunity, upgrade): You're in Scenario 3. Don't just fix it. Improve it. Invest the extra time and money to get a better system than you had before.
This worked for us, but our situations are complex. Your mileage may vary if you're dealing with a discontinued fixture where even the closest replacement driver requires re-wiring. If that's the case, the calculus might be different: you might be looking at a whole-new-fixture replacement.
I can only speak to domestic operations. If you're dealing with international logistics for a specific German brand driver, there are probably factors I'm not aware of.
