Let's answer the obvious question: what does a motion sensor do? In lighting, it detects whether a room is occupied and automatically turns lights on, off, or dims them based on occupancy. A standalone occupancy sensor does that for one area. It's a simple device, and it can save energy.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (energy.gov), occupancy sensors can reduce lighting energy use by 30-50% in the right spaces, like conference rooms, restrooms, and storage areas. That's a real number, and it's why I always include sensors when I buy for an office.
But the comparison isn't just sensor vs. no sensor. It is standalone sensor vs. sensor connected to a system.
A standalone sensor controls its own load. Motion detected? Lights on. No motion for 15 minutes? Lights off. That's it. It works. But it doesn't know about anything else in the room.
With the Legrand Adorne IoT system, the sensor is part of a Zigbee network. The same motion event can trigger multiple behaviors: dim the lights in one zone, turn off another, or send a notification to the maintenance person. You can set a meeting mode where the lights dim to 50% when the room is empty. That's where the value shows up.
A Note on Zigbee Protocols
You'll hear the term Zigbee protocols when researching smart lighting. Zigbee is an open wireless standard maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (csa-iot.org). It operates on low power and creates a mesh network, so devices can talk to each other through the gateway.
For a buyer, the protocol matters because it affects your options later. Legrand Adorne IoT works on Zigbee, which is designed to work with devices from different manufacturers that also follow the standard. That doesn't mean every Zigbee device works with every other one. Compatibility still depends on profiles and how a device is implemented. But it's a better starting point than a closed system.
This was surprising for me: the open standard mattered more than the brand name. I'm comfortable specifying Legrand because the Zigbee foundation means we're not locked into a proprietary future. If we add a window sensor or a third-party Zigbee switch later, there's a reasonable chance it'll join the same mesh. Not guaranteed, but reasonable.
Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a conventional setup if:
- You're outfitting a single room or a simple space with no plans for automation.
- Your existing wiring is straightforward and your electrician is familiar with it.

- You're retrofitting an office, retail space, or multi-room facility where scenes and automation add real value.
- You want one vendor to own compatibility from the switch to the sensor to the gateway.
- You're already thinking about adding more smart devices in the next few years.
But don't choose it just because it's smart. Choose it because the total cost of a working system, including your time, the electrician's time, and the risk of rework, makes sense for your project. That's the value-over-price framework I use for everything now.
The lowest quoted price often isn't the lowest total cost.
