Legrand Zigbee SmartThings Lighting: A Small Office Buyer’s Honest Guide

For a small commercial lighting retrofit, I’d skip the dedicated lighting-control panel and build it around Legrand Zigbee-enabled switches and sensors paired to a Samsung SmartThings hub. That’s what we did in our 40-person office for about $1,800 in parts, and it took us from eight awkward manual switches to four controlled lighting zones with occupancy sensing. You don’t need a $20,000 control system to get reliable smart lighting in a small workspace—you need compatible hardware and a bit of patience.

This isn’t hypothetical. I’m the office administrator for a 40-person company, and I handle all facilities and supply ordering—roughly $80,000 a year across 12 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I care as much about clean invoicing as I do about light levels. In 2024, I consolidated our three office locations into one lighting spec. Architectural dimming without the mystery

Legrand architectural dimming is one of those terms that sounds complicated. In practice, it means the dimmer is designed for smooth control across a range of LED loads, not just a basic on/off with a fading speed. That mattered in our conference room, where the overhead panels and wall sconces needed to drop together without the classic 40% jump. We didn’t use architectural dimmers everywhere—just in rooms where the visual experience was part of the meeting.

When I was comparing dimmers, the number that made the difference was the low-end trim. A basic dimmer might cut out at 20% of brightness; an architectural one keeps control down to near 1-5%, depending on the model. For LED tape in the undercabinet lights, that smooth low end is what makes a break room feel like a meeting room at 7 a.m.

Legrand Adorne IoT: where it earns its place

The Adorne line is the prettier one. We used Adorne switches and outlets in the reception and in the glass-front conference room, and the more budget-friendly Radiant line in the open workspace. People notice the difference, and functionally both sit on the same Zigbee network. If you’re on a tight budget, spend the extra money where the owner or client actually sees it.

The “IoT” part isn’t just a buzzword here. Adorne devices with network connectivity let us check switch status from the operations manager’s desk and set schedules without touching a physical panel. For a company that sometimes forgets to turn off the reception lights, that feature is worth the premium.

Where to cut LED strip (the question that gets everyone)

If you search for “where to cut LED strip,” the short answer is: cut only at the marked copper pads, usually every 5 cm. If you cut anywhere else, you’ll lose the connection point and kill that piece of the run.

  • Find the copper pads—the cut points are marked with a line and often a scissors icon.

Zigbee is flexible, but a consumer hub gets brittle when you start adding complex schedules. Also, don’t expect the same energy savings in every office. One more thing: small orders are okay. Our first $600 order from a Legrand distributor was just 12 switches, and they treated us as well as they treat contractors. The other two distributors I called didn’t return calls after hearing the quantity. The one that did gets our larger follow-up orders now.

If I re-did this project, I’d change one practical thing: order the LED strip, drivers, and switches together so the electrician doesn’t make a second trip. The extra dispatch visit cost more than the express shipping would have. Not a technical mistake—just a planning one.
