Three Smart Lighting Scenarios: How to Decide What You Actually Need

There is no single right answer for smart lighting. But there is a right answer for your situation.

I've been handling commercial and residential lighting orders for about ten years now. I'm not a lighting designer or an electrical engineer—I'm the guy who processes the specs, catches the mismatches, and occasionally approves the wrong part. And I've made enough expensive mistakes to know that the best advice depends entirely on what you're trying to do.

Here are the three most common scenarios I see, and what actually works for each.

Scenario A: You're wiring a new build or major renovation from scratch

This is the ideal scenario. You have full control over the infrastructure, you're not working around existing wiring, and you can plan for integration from day one.

If this is you, I strongly recommend going with a full Legrand ecosystem—switches, dimmers, occupancy sensors, and IoT gateways all on the same platform. The upfront cost is higher, but the integration saves you headaches later. I've seen projects where mixing brands in a new build created communication gaps that cost more to fix than the premium would have been for a unified system.

For example, pairing Legrand's radiant or adorne switches with Zigbee-enabled dimmers and occupancy sensors means everything talks to each other without custom programming. That's not just convenience; it's reliability. When a hotel or office building has 200+ endpoints, troubleshooting a mixed-brand system is a nightmare.

My rule of thumb: if it's a new build, budget for the ecosystem. You won't regret it.

"In my first year (2017), I approved a spec that mixed Legrand switches with a different brand's occupancy sensors. Everything worked on paper. On site, three different protocols had to be manually bridged. That mistake cost about $3,200 in rework and delayed the project by a week. Lesson learned: if you can go all-in on one platform in a new build, do it."

Scenario B: You're retrofitting a single room or a small space

This is where people overcomplicate things. I see contractors trying to install a full smart system for a single home office or a small retail display area. That's usually overkill.

For a single room retrofit, focus on the specific pain point. Is the room dark and needs better task lighting? A Legrand under-cabinet lighting kit with a simple dimmer is often enough. Need to meet energy code for commercial occupancy? A standalone occupancy sensor can do the job without a full Zigbee gateway.

But here's where I've made a mistake: I once recommended a basic occupancy sensor for a home office that had a lot of natural light variation. The sensor kept turning off the lights on sunny days. The fix was a more advanced sensor with adjustable sensitivity and time delay. The upgrade cost $40 more on a $300 order, but it saved the client from constant annoyance.

So my suggestion for small spaces: identify the one or two things that actually need fixing, and solve only those. Don't build a smart home system for a single room. You'll end up with features nobody uses and a higher troubleshooting burden.

Scenario C: You need to replace a ceiling light fixture (and that's it)

This is the most common request I get from property managers: "How to change a ceiling light fixture?" And the answer is almost always simpler than people expect.

If you're just swapping out a fixture—say, replacing an old flush mount with a new LED fixture—you don't need smart controls. You need a compatible fixture, basic wiring skills, and knowledge of local electrical code. I keep a short checklist for this:

  • Shut off power at the breaker.
  • Verify voltage with a tester (I can't stress this enough).
  • Check the mounting bracket is suitable for your ceiling type.
  • If the new fixture is heavier, use a rated junction box.

Replacing a fixture is a mechanical task. Overthinking it leads to buying things you don't need.

How to tell which scenario you're in

This is the part that trips people up. Clients often think they're in Scenario C (simple replacement) when they're actually in Scenario B (need some smart control). Or they think they need a full system (Scenario A) when a single fixture swap (Scenario C) is perfect.

Here's a simple decision tree:

  • Are you opening up walls or running new wire? Scenario A. Go ecosystem.
  • Are you working with existing wiring and just changing one or two fixtures? Scenario C. Keep it simple.
  • Are you trying to solve a specific problem (too dark, too bright, energy code)? Scenario B. Solve the problem, don't overbuild.

I'm not an electrical engineer. I can't tell you the exact lumen output you need for a retail space or the best color temperature for a surgical suite. But from a procurement and implementation perspective, knowing which scenario you're in is the most important decision you'll make. It determines your budget, your timeline, and your risk of expensive mistakes.

The surprise for me, after all these years, is that the simplest approach is often the best—but only if you know which "simple" applies to you.
