What Is a Smart Lighting System? A Last-Minute Checklist for Legrand Zigbee Controls

In my role coordinating lighting control installs for commercial clients, "emergency" usually means a phone call three days before a final walkthrough. The one that defined everything for me: in March 2024, a facilities director called at 4:40 PM on a Wednesday. He needed a full smart lighting system in a 3,200-square-foot open office—programmable switches, occupancy sensors, dimmers, the lot—before Monday's inspection. Normal lead time for that scope: three weeks. We handed it over Friday afternoon, which saved the landlord from a $2,400-a-day delay penalty on a space that was already two weeks late.

This is the checklist that made that possible. I've used it across 200+ rush lighting jobs since 2020. It won't make every deadline, but it will stop you from missing the ones you could actually hit.

What Is a Smart Lighting System?

Before the steps, let's make sure we're talking about the same thing. A smart lighting system is not a single connected bulb you can toggle from an app—that's a connected light. A smart lighting system is a set of controls, like switches, dimmers, and sensors, that communicate over a network and follow shared rules based on schedule, occupancy, or daylight.

Three layers make it work:

  • Inputs like the Legrand programmable light switch and the Legrand motion sensor—devices that detect a person, an action, or a scene change.
  • Outputs like dimmers and relays—devices that change the light level or cut power.
  • The network connecting them. Zigbee is the one I spec most often for commercial retrofits, because it's open, low-power, and built for lighting control.

If you searched "what is smart lighting system," that's the answer in one paragraph. Now here's the part that actually saves you on a deadline.

Step 1: Confirm the Platform Before You Promise Anything

The first question isn't "what lights do we need?" It's "what will control them?" Find out whether the client has a hub or a gateway already. If they're on Zigbee—through a SmartThings hub, a Hubitat controller, or a Legrand IoT gateway—you're in good shape.

If they don't have a hub and assume everything runs over plain Wi-Fi, the project just got bigger. Cloud-only Wi-Fi switches introduce latency, depend on internet stability, and often complicate commercial installations. That doesn't make them wrong for every job, but it changes the scope and the price.

A communication trap I hit in 2023: I told a client "Zigbee-compatible." They heard "it'll talk to the smart lock we already bought." Those turned out to be different things. Zigbee compatibility at the radio level doesn't guarantee feature-level interoperability. I'll circle back to that in the final section, because it costs more lost hours than any wiring mistake I've seen.

Step 2: Select Controls by Room Function, Not by Catalog

Once the platform is confirmed, match each room to the right control device. The two Legrand products I reach for most in rush jobs:

  • The Legrand programmable light switch. Good for offices, conference rooms, and spaces where you need one-touch scene presets or schedule control at the switch itself.
  • The Legrand motion sensor. Good for bathrooms, hallways, storage rooms, and anywhere the lights should handle themselves. Remember the distinction: an occupancy sensor turns lights ON and OFF automatically; a vacancy sensor requires a manual ON but turns OFF automatically. In commercial settings, vacancy sensors often align better with energy codes like Title 24 and ASHRAE 90.1.

The honest recommendation rule applies here. These are defensible choices for 80% of commercial spaces. But if a client just wants to dim a single lamp in a home office, don't sell them a wallbox retrofit. A plug-in dimmer is the more honest recommendation.

Step 3: Check the Neutral Wire Before You Touch the Wall

This is where more last-minute installs go sideways than anywhere else. Most smart switches—including Legrand's adorne and radiant series—need a neutral wire in the wallbox to power their own brains without pushing current through the lighting circuit.

The mistake isn't checking. It's checking with a meter while the existing switch is still in the wall and assuming you're fine because you saw white wires. Those white wires can be part of a 3-way traveler arrangement or a daisy-chain that isn't actually a neutral. Pull the existing switch out before you promise a time. If the building has older two-wire switch legs, you'll need to budget for a rewire or pick a no-neutral switch, and you need to know that on day one, not the day of the install.

Step 4: Plan the Zigbee Mesh, Not Just the Room Layout

Zigbee is a mesh network. Every mains-powered device can repeat signals for other devices, which stretches the useful range well beyond the 30–60 feet each individual radio handles indoors. Battery-powered devices—some sensors and wireless switches—don't repeat. They just talk.

The oversight I see most often: commissioning everything at a table in the back office, then installing the devices. What was a healthy mesh five feet apart breaks apart when the devices hit long hallways and steel-framed rooms. The fix is a re-pair, which costs 5–10 minutes per device. On a tight deadline, that math stings.

Better order: mount first, commission in place. It takes more time at the wall, but it saves a full re-pair session later.

Step 5: Set Up Zigbee Encryption the Right Way

Zigbee uses AES-128 encryption at the network layer. That's solid. But "encrypted" doesn't mean "locked down." In standard security mode—what many consumer Zigbee hubs use—the trust center link key is documented in the Zigbee 3.0 specification, including the well-known "ZigbeeAlliance09" key. It's not a secret, and it doesn't need to be leaked; it's published for interoperability.

On a commercial install, that matters. If your platform supports a unique link key or install-code provisioning, use it. It won't stop a determined professional attacker, but it stops the far more realistic scenario of someone on site sniffing the network and replaying commands.

When I'm weighing this on a project, the calculation is simple: 20 minutes of secure provisioning now versus a full day of re-pairing and recovery after an incident. The March 2024 rush job changed how I think about this—we almost skipped the secure setup to save time, and the extra hour barely cost us anything. Seeing hundreds of devices commissioned afterward, I'm convinced it's the single most skipped step in smart lighting.

Step 6: Commission in the Right Order

When you're up against a deadline, sequence matters:

  1. Update firmware on the gateway first. A few minutes here prevents cascading pairing weirdness later.
  2. Pair the mains-powered devices one by one. Name them as you go, not afterward.
  3. Pair battery-powered sensors last. They're the pickiest about joining, so you want the mesh stable before you introduce them.
  4. Test each zone from the hub, then from the wall. Devices can report "joined" yet never actually receive commands until you wake them by physical manipulation.

A penny-wise mistake from last year: I skipped firmware updates on 20 switches to save 45 minutes. One switch refused to join the mesh, the support ticket ate the entire day, and the "savings" vanished. A classic case of saving the small amount and paying the big one.

Where It Goes Wrong Under Pressure

Here's the part nobody expects on day one: Zigbee's openness is both its strength and its trap. "Open" means a Legrand switch and a Zigbee kwikset lock can join the same network. Both are Zigbee-certified. But joining the network doesn't guarantee a hub can control each device's features, let alone integrate them into meaningful automations.

So when someone asks "can I use a Zigbee lock with a Legrand lighting system?" the accurate answer is: "maybe, but test the exact integration before you build a plan around it." The same applies to any cross-brand pairing. It's the kind of mismatch that shows up at the worst possible moment, and it costs you trust as much as time.

Another classic pressure mistake: ignoring wallbox depth. Zigbee dimmers are deeper than many standard switches, and they don't fit neatly in a shallow 1-gang box with a bundle of old wires behind them. In a rush, the temptation is to push hard and screw it closed. The consequence is usually an overheated device or a callback for a flickering load. Neither is worth the ten minutes you "saved."

And to be clear, this entire approach is overkill for some jobs. A single stairwell light with one switch doesn't need a mesh plan. The goal is to buy and install only the controls that have a job to do.

Bottom Line

When you're racing a deadline, the equipment rarely fails. The intelligence checks fail. Confirming the platform, checking for neutrals, planning the mesh, locking down encryption, and commissioning in order are the pre-flight list that converts a last-minute request from an emergency into a manageable project.

As of January 2025, I run this same sequence on every rush install. It isn't flashy. But in a job where the difference between delivering and explaining is measured in hours, the process is everything.
