If you're managing office lighting, you've probably stared at the Legrand light switch family and wondered: which one do I actually need? Motion sensor? Dimmer? Basic switch? The answer isn't as straightforward as picking the most popular one.

Here's the thing: there is no single 'best' Legrand switch for every office space. The best choice depends entirely on how the room is used. After processing orders for three office locations over the past few years, I've learned this the hard way.

Let's break it down by the most common office scenarios.

Scenario 1: The Open Office / Open-Plan Workspace

This is the most common, and often the trickiest. You have rows of desks, maybe some low partitions. People come and go, have meetings, take calls. The lighting needs to be general, even, and energy-efficient.

The best approach here is often an occupancy sensor with a simple manual override.

We tried installing standard switch dimmers in our main open office. Big mistake. People would leave the lights on at full brightness when they left for lunch, or they'd dim them to a level that made the rest of the team squint. The energy savings from dimming were completely offset by the lights being left on overnight.

I went back and forth between putting in a basic dimmer and a full smart switch. The dimmer offered lower cost, about $35 per switch vs. $80 for a connected model. But the smart switch offered scheduling and remote control.

Ultimately, for most private offices, a simple Legrand radiant® dimmer with a manual control is the sweet spot. It's professional-looking, adjustable, and costs less. The occupants can find their own light level. The absolute best and most cost-effective solution here is a ceiling-mounted occupancy sensor controlling standard wall switches in the area.

Don't overthink this. A motion sensor switch in the hallway is overkill and actually creates problems. A single ceiling sensor can cover a long corridor. It's cheaper, more reliable, and easier to maintain.

I made the mistake of using wall-mounted occupancy sensors in our first office. They kept getting triggered by shadows or people standing near them, but missing movement further down the hall. We had to rewire a few areas. The ceiling sensor was a 'why didn't I do that first' moment.

How to Decide Which Scenario You're In

Here's a quick way to figure out what you need:

  1. How many people use the room? More than 3? Lean toward vacancy sensors and basic on/off switching. 1-2 people? Dimmers become more practical.

  3. Do you need energy code compliance? Most commercial buildings require auto-off controls in certain spaces. Check your local code before ordering.

A final thought from a purchasing perspective: The total cost of a lighting control system isn't just the switch price. It includes wiring, installation labor, and—importantly—the cost of maintenance calls when someone complains the lights don't work 'right.' A simpler system with the right sensor for the room is almost always cheaper and more reliable than a complex system with the wrong one.
